Five hundred years old Beijing Ancient Observatory
Beijing Ancient Observatory lies beside the Jian Guo Men and was first built in 1442 in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It holds 570 years history and was the national observatory in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. It is one of the oldest astronomical observatory in the world and was the national observatory at that time.
The observatory is so high that you can see the astronomical instruments at the top of the observatory from a great distance.
The distance meter, cast in 1673, was an astronomical instrument used in ancient times to measure the angular distance between any two celestial bodies within an angle of 60 degrees, and was the first chronometer used on an observatory in China.
The ancient observatory is about 14 meters high, with a small roof area and 8 sets of Qing-made astronomical instruments on it. Now it has been enclosed by iron fence, and there is a text introduction beside it.
Beijing Ancient Observatory holds the record of observation time: 487 years (from 1442 to 1929) .Tony Blair (British Prime Minister), Guy Verhofstadt (Belgium Prime Minister),and others have come to visit the Ancient Observatory.
