  The Catholic Church in Beijing

[Xishiku Catholic Church]

When you enter the courtyard and walk along the canal, the church is in front of you.Xishiku Catholic Church, also known as the North Church, is where the Beijing Cardinal Bishop Office is located. The church was originally located at Xipancanchiguo in Zhongnanhai (opposite the former Beijing Library), a land bestowed by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, who also hand-written the calligraphic plaque and couplets for the building. It was named "Savior Church" and officially opened on 9 February 1703.

On the front of the church building, the four icons of St. John and St. Paul are carved.
There are thirty-six columns in the hall, and the plan of the lobby has a cross-shaped facade. Gothic architecture is characterized by the use of pointed arches in order to make the house tower straight up.
In 1958, Xishku Church was closed and put to other uses. 1985, the Chinese government restored Xishku Church and held the opening ceremony on December 24, 1985. The Xishiku Church is a building where East meets West, and it is the largest, oldest and most splendid church in Beijing.
